Having added new programs for keiki, kupuna and more, the 12th annual Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival needs volunteers more than ever, according to Executive Director Roger Jellinek.

The nonprofit Hawai‘i Literary Arts Council has named the 2017 recipients of the Elliot Cades Awards for Literature.

Poet and essayist Craig Santos Perez, an associate professor in the English Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, is the recipient of the Cades award for an established artist. The author of “from unincorporated territory [guma’],” Perez also won a Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry in 2016.

The award for an emerging artist went to Christy Passion, a critical-care nurse, poet and author of “Still Out of Place.”

New this year, the Loretta D. Petrie Award for outstanding service to Hawaii’s literary community is going to Darrell Lum and Eric Chock, founding editors of Bamboo Ridge Press.

The winners will receive their awards at 11 a.m. May 6 at the Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BOOK & MUSIC FEST

Having added new programs for keiki, kupuna and more, the 12th annual Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival needs volunteers more than ever, according to Executive Director Roger Jellinek. “We absolutely depend on our volunteers to make this work, and we are looking for at least 65 more,” he said.

Rich with readings, talks and live dance and music, the free festival will be held May 6-7 at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds. Volunteers can register here.
