Reigning World Surf League champion John John Florence lost in the semifinal round of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Queensland, Australia, on Sunday. In 4- to 6-foot surf, Florence was eliminated by 0.40 points at the hands of Matt Wilkinson of Australia, 15.90 to 15.50. The third-place finish for Florence is a career best on the Gold Coast. Australian Owen Wright took home the title.
On the women’s side in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast, Carissa Moore scored a 13.83 in the quarterfinal round, but it wasn’t enough as Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore scored a 10-point ride en route to a 17.50 total to move into the semifinals. Gilmore eventually went on to win the event.
The next event on the WSL Championship Tour is the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in Western Australia from March 29 to April 9.
HPU, Dixie State split softball doubleheader
Emiliee Leonard swatted a two-run homer to help Hawaii Pacific defeat Dixie State 3-2 in the second game of a softball doubleheader on Sunday at Okita Field. Earlier in the day, the Trailblazers (26-7, 12-4 Pacific West Conference) won the opener 5-2.
The Sharks (12-8, 5-5) return to action at 1 p.m. Tuesday for a home doubleheader against conference leader Cal Baptist.
