Road rage murder suspect pleads not guilty
A 73-year-old man charged with murder in an apparent road rage shooting pleaded not guilty Thursday.
Darryl M. Freeman appeared before Judge Clarence Pacarro via closed-circuit video link from Oahu Community Correctional Center after an Oahu grand jury indicted him on a charge of second-degree murder and firearm offenses in the March 4 death of Keenyn Pahio, 31, of Kalihi.
Attorney Rustam Barbee entered the plea on Freeman’s behalf and requested Freeman be referred to the public defender’s office because he and his family are unable to financially retain private counsel.
Pacarro granted the request.
Freeman allegedly shot Pahio after they were involved in what may have begun as a road rage incident on Moanalua Road fronting Aiea Shopping Center.
The two were arguing when Freeman allegedly shot Pahio in the head with a handgun.

Police said witnesses reported he ran over Pahio as he fled the scene in his van. Freeman was arrested at his home on Heen Way in Aiea shortly after the shooting.
