Scores of residents evacuated their homes in the McCully area Wednesday night after a fire engulfed a two-story duplex in a densely populated area that included a three-story apartment, other duplexes and single-story wooden homes.
Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said four homes were either heavily damaged or destroyed, including a two-story building that collapsed.
He said firefighters were actively searching the collapsed building to see if there were any occupants.
The three-alarm fire occurred in the Hauoli Street area near Waiola and Citron streets.
About 55 firefighters in 15 companies were dispatched to the 800 block of Hauoli Street where a two-story family dwelling was on fire, said Jenkins.
The fire started at about 7:40 p.m. and firefighters were able to knock down the fire in about 15 minutes, although it continued to smoulder in some areas, Jenkins said.
