Meheula Vista, a senior residential complex, is open at last in Mililani, with 75 apartments in its first phase. Hard to imagine but this housing for kupuna was controversial.
Some community members had wanted the original plan for a performing arts complex. There was a petition opposing the senior project, signed by 800 residents.
Perhaps it’s time for a reality check: A consult with folks living next door to a noisy vacation rental might help. Elders are nice, quiet neighbors, as a rule. And that theater complex? It’s been curtains for that project for years now.
Heavy rains may pass, but not the aftereffects
A flash flood warning and a severe thunderstorm watch were lifted mid-morning Wednesday — a few hours after heavy rains tapered on Oahu. Even so, soggy conditions closed the Honolulu Zoo and several municipal golf courses for the day, and power outages affected thousands of Hawaiian Electric Co. customers. A flash flood watch was in effect for all islands through the night.
While clouds may be lifting today, be sure to take care on waterlogged roadways and heed the state’s brown water advisories — stay out of flood waters and storm runoff, which could be tainted by overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, pathogens, chemicals and debris.
