The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified today a 65-year-old woman who was fatally struck by a tour bus on her birthday as Jui-Ching Hu, of Waikiki.

Hu was hit while crossing Mahukona Street in a crosswalk on the mauka side of Ala Moana Center at about 8:20 a.m. Thursday. Police said a tour bus driver ran over Hu while turning left from Kona Street onto Mahukona. Hu died at the scene.

The 51-year-old driver, who works for Travel Plaza Transportation, was unaware he had hit a pedestrian until someone flagged him down. The company said he has been an employee since 2011 and has no prior incidents on his record.

Police said the case was under investigation.

It was the fifth traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared with three at the same time last year.
