Hawaii junior Chloe Barr and senior Nikki-Marie Bell scored three goals each and the seventh-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team held off No. 11 Pacific 9-7 on Friday in the opening day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Newport Beach, Calif.
Sophomore Femke Aan scored twice, senior Gabi Mantellato added another goal and junior goalie Ymane Hage made nine saves for the Rainbow Wahine (8-4), who face No. 2 USC today. The outcome will determine UH’s second opponent of the day.
Barr broke a 5-5 tie in the third quarter against UOP and thwarted a Tigers rally with her final goal in the fourth period.
UH opened the road trip with a 22-7 win at Whittier on Wednesday, led by Aan’s five goals.
Chaminade swept in doubleheader
The Chaminade softball team dropped both games of a nonconference doubleheader to Missouri Western State at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park on Thursday.
The Griffons (13-3) defeated the Silverswords (2-6) 9-2 in the first game and 9-3 in the second.
Rainelle Matsuoka and Nicole Erichsen were both 3-for-6 throughout the day for Chaminade, with Erichsen homering in game 2.
Barbara Billingsley earned a complete-game win in the first game with 10 strikeouts and three hits. Luana Moreno also went the distance and was tagged with the loss, giving up nine unearned runs on 10 hits.
Kenzie Hilzer got the win in Game 2 to improve to 6-2 on the season, while Kayla Higuchi went 4 2/3 innings in the loss.
