Splitting the day between two ballparks, the University of Hawaii softball team opened the second day of the DeMarini Desert Classic with a win over San Jose State before falling to Texas State on Friday in Las Vegas.
UH right-hander Brittany Hitchcock earned a complete-game victory and freshman Callee Heen hit her first collegiate home run in UH’s 3-0 win over San Jose State at UNLV’s Eller Media Stadium.
Texas State’s Jaelyn Young then hit two homers and drove in five runs in the Bobcats’ 6-1 win at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park, leaving the Rainbow Wahine (3-3) with a split of their doubleheader.
“I like the fight in them,” UH coach Bob Coolen said in a phone interview. “We have some team speed, we’re learning a lot about ourselves for sure.”
Hitchcock (2-1) held the Spartans to four hits in her second shutout of the season and ninth of her career. She struck out five and didn’t allow a runner past second base.
UH senior Heather Morales opened the scoring with an RBI single to score Danielle Garcielita in the top of the third inning. Heen followed with her home run to center field and Hitchcock held off the Spartans the rest of the way.
Garcielita went 3-for-3 at the top of the order and eight UH starters recorded at least one hit in UH’s 12-hit attack.
“Brittany pitched well. … We left a lot of runners on base in the first game. We ran ourselves out of innings. We didn’t do some smart things on the bases, but we gotta learn,” Coolen said.
When the Wahine took the field against Texas State later in the afternoon, “we were totally flat,” Coolen said.
Young gave the Bobcats the lead with a two-run homer in the second inning and put the game away with a three-run blast in the fifth.
Randi Rupp held UH to four hits, walked four and struck out eight over six innings to earn the win. UH senior Kanani Aina Cabrales struck out three and walked three in four innings and took the loss. Dana Thomsen pitched the final two innings for UH, surrendering Young’s second homer.
Wahine sophomore Nicole Lopez accounted for UH’s scoring with a home run in the third inning.
UH is scheduled to face Memphis today at 10:15 a.m. and Colorado State at 2:45, although rain is in the forecast in Las Vegas. The Wahine conclude the tournament Sunday against Nevada.
