Hawaiian Airlines tops U.S. carriers in punctuality for 13th straight year

Hawaiian Airlines’ reign as the nation’s most punctual carrier has now reached 13 years in a row.

The state’s largest airline averaged a 91.1 percent on-time performance rating in 2016 to beat out 11 other carriers, according to data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Hawaiian achieved the top ranking in every month but one last year, and for the 12 months exceeded the industry average of 81.4 percent by 9.7 percentage points. In December Hawaiian led the way with an 85.1 percent on-time performance.

The DOT considers a flight on time if it arrives less than 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival time.

“It’s no secret that our more than 6,000 employees work passionately every day to ensure our guests arrive at their destination on-time,” Hawaiian President and CEO Mark Dunkerley said in a statement. “Our success the past 13 years is a direct result of their hard work.”

For the year, Hawaiian also ranked first for fewest involuntary passengers denied boarding with 0.05 per 10,000 passengers, placed seventh for fewest consumer complaints with 1.16 per 100,000 passengers and ranked seventh for fewest mishandled-baggage reports with 2.67 per 1,000 passengers.

The DOT did not rank fewest flight cancellations for the year, but Hawaiian ranked first in December with just 0.1 percent of 6,347 flights.
