It’s official: Kahuku names Freitas as football coach

JAMM AQUINO / NOV. 19

Kahuku fans cheered during the first half of the state championship football game on Nov. 19 at Aloha Stadium.

Former Kamehameha, University of Arizona and Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Makoa Freitas is officially the new interim head coach at Kahuku, according to KahukuHigh.org.

Freitas takes over for Vavae Tata, who is out of the Red Raiders head coaching post after two years at the helm.

Freitas, the son of former NFL player and former University of Hawaii-West Oahu chancellor Rockne Freitas, was an offensive line coach under Tata.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser first reported the change of head coaches on Friday.

The family plan is alive and well in Hawaii. It’s who you know.

I may have missed it but what was the reason for the coaching change. SA reported earlier about the rumor but it looks conflicting: Kahuku admin releasing the coach, the coach was taking many trips to the mainland and wasn’t on campus like normal. You could interpret this as the coach was fine with the 2 year stay and looking forward to another coaching venture.

I want to hear more about Coach Tata not addressing his team at halftime of the state championship football game. That was the point I left the stadium and went home. It was obvious at that point St Louis was going to win. St Louis was shredding Kahuku’s “vaunted” D the first 3 series. Kahuku did get a short lived 7-6 lead, thanks to some bad calls by the officials that put the ball on the St Louis 1 yard line. But St Louis then came right back and yet again shredded the Kahuku D for a TD. The Kahuku DB tripped over his own feet on the scoring pass. I was so upset I left the stadium right then and there. I wonder if Coach Tata was equally upset by the play of his team.

KHON2 reported on Friday that Tata’s contract expired.

There are no “contracts” for public school coaches. They serve at the will of the principal. If that was indeed reported, the reporter was misinformed and ignorant.

Let’s see if any parents complain about Freitas, haha.

“New Interim Head Coach” … makes no sense t me …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

    • KonaWarrior says:

Good point 808, why would the announcement be made with the title “interim head coach”? Kind of creates a sense of uncertainty for not only the coach himself but the community of supporters.

  5. bleedgreen says:

If Makoa is anything like his dad, he will be a great coach.

To me the real trips are that principal and that A.D. A.D.D. kind of decisionmaking never leads to stability–ever. Like a revolving door out there. Watch, the basketball coach is going to get too much power so they are going to fire him next. To me that epitomizes power tripping. But that’s only my opinion of what is going on.

    • jimbone says:

Crazy, they not gonna fire the basketball coach. This was his best recruiting season so far. Look all the recruits they bought in for this years team, that’s why they seeded #1

      • iwanaknow says:

The BBall coach will not be fired…..he has a full time job down the road at BYU-Hawaii in the Housing Office……..he can walk away any time he feels like it.

play nice with him……..or he walks.

        • mapk96 says:

wasn’t that bball coach the reason why UH bball program got sanctioned by NCAA. Wasn’t he the one who messed with a players transcripts or something like that?

      • islandfever says:

So the ILH with all their recruits cant manage a #1 ranking? Goes to show that when the playing field is even (Kahuku and their measely 2 recruits) they are the #1

        • PinkSushi says:

but are they really “recruits”? Samuta Avea was at Kahuku High 2 years ago. Dan Fotu is Polynesian so he fits right in at Kahuku. It wasn’t like Kahuku was bringing in mainland popolos.

        • islandfever says:

Fotu is the only true recruit, Villa is family but lets just say he is recruited. Avea is homegrown.

Btw- Villa is the only true superstar of this team without him they are not #1.
