Chauncey Orr scored a career-high 34 points and Connor Looney added 22 as No. 3 Hawaii Pacific rolled past Fresno Pacific 90-78 in a PacWest men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Blaisdell Arena.
Jonothan Janssen added 13 points and Clayton Guy 10 for the Sharks (22-2, 14-2 PacWest). HPU hit 14 of 30 3-point attempts with Orr going 7-for-8 from behind the arc.
Sam Burt led the Sunbirds (4-19, 4-12) with 25 points and T.J. Viney added 20.
>> At McCabe Gym, Kiran Shastri scored 22 points, 18 coming on six 3-pointers, and Chaminade rebounded from last Saturday’s 36-point loss at Dixie State with an 81-70 victory over Academy of Art.
Rohndell Goodwin added 20 points and Kuany Kuany 16 for the Silverswords (16-9, 12-6 PacWest), who outscored the Urban Knights 51-32 in the second half. Kendall Brown had 16 points and Dante Williams 15 for ArtU (6-15, 5-10).
>> At Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, Brian Ishola scored 24 points and added 19 rebounds as Hawaii Hilo pulled away for a 92-81 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii.
Ryley Callaghan added 19 points and Parker Farris 17 for the Vulcans (8-14, 6-10 PacWest). Gabriel Andrade came off the bench for 14 points and Jeff Given 13 for the Seasiders (5-17, 3-13).
Vulcans pull away from Seasiders
Shar Graham-Bernisto came off the bench for 17 points and Hawaii Hilo outscored Brigham Young-Hawaii 14-8 in the second quarter en route to a 65-55 victory in PacWest women’s basketball play at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Saturday night.
Graham-Bernisto was 11-for-14 from the free-throw line for the Vulcans (7-12, 6-9 PacWest). Kim Schmelz added 12 points and Sydney Mercer 11.
Tyvette White had 12 points and Maia Jean Watene 10 for the Seasiders (9-15, 5-11),
>> At Blaisdell Arena, Sarah Liva came off the bench for 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 71-55 victory over Fresno Pacific.
The Sharks (17-4, 14-2 PacWest) outscored the Sunbirds 33-15 after halftime. Breanna Mackenzie and VeAnne Navarro each added 11 points for HPU, winning its fourth straight.
Bree Alvarez had 19 points and Landynn Munster 13 for Fresno Pacific (5-19, 2-14).
>> At McCabe Gym, Lilia Maio tied her season high with 24 points, but it was not enough as Chaminade fell to Academy of Art, 75-63.
Destiny Castro added 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Silverswords (3-19, 3-15 PacWest). Alana Simon scored 21 points for the Urban Knights (13-10, 9-6).
Paddler Mechler to speak at QB club
Suzi Mechler, president of the Hawaii Adaptive Paddling Association, is the featured speaker at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
HAPA is a program that provides people with physical and other challenges a chance to become involved with outrigger canoe paddling.
A buffet lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow at noon. The weekly meeting is open to the public.
