Firefighters responded Thursday to a blaze at an auto scrapyard in Waipahu. The fire started at approximately 11:30 a.m. at Tows R Us, 94-233 Leonui St. Ten companies with 36 firefighters responded and contained the blaze to a large pile of scrap parts and several old vehicles slated to be scrapped, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins. The fire was contained by 12:08 p.m., and Jenkins said the Fire Department’s HazMat team also responded to check for any fuel spills. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
Visitors robbed by armed man in Waikiki
Police are investigating an early morning robbery Thursday in Waikiki. Just before 12:50 a.m., police said, a male suspect confronted two visitors — a 42-year-old man and 38-year-old woman — on Kalakaua Avenue while brandishing a dangerous instrument. The suspect demanded property and fled after the victims handed over their possessions. Police said no injuries were reported.
