UH baseball coach Trapasso gets one-year extension
University of Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso has received a one-year contract extension, athletic director David Matlin announced in a release today.
“We’re excited about the upcoming 2017 campaign,” Matlin said in the release. “Coach Trapasso and his staff have put together a top recruiting class to allow them to compete in a challenging Big West Conference.”
Trapasso is entering his 16th season with the Rainbow Warriors. His contract had been set to expire at the end of this season.

At least the poor performer didnt get a raise as well. If this year is a wash time to start looking.
Well, looks like Dave Matlin is not the right guy to take UH to the next level. The correct call is to let Trap go after this year or give him a three year deal. Decisions must be based on the long term welfare of the program and not because the AD doesn’t have what it takes to make tough decisions.
15 losing years, amazing
Wow, I thought the last AD had no balls…
why the extension? what has he done during his tenure?
Mediocrity being rewarded, such a state thing. No wonder UH as an institution is considered mediocre at best.
Tragic!
Guess this allows both parties to prepare for change. Allows Trap to look for another job and prepares UH to search for a replacement. One doesn’t wait so long to announce just a 1 year extension. There must have been a lot of talk between Matlin and Trap behind the scenes to reach this agreement.
Yeah, lots of talk…watch this one year extension will result in another year after 2018! Very predictable. I had faith in Matlin, but this just proves he is not the leader I thought he would be. Now, all the other non winning coaches will also get another year + 1.
8 winning seasons, 5 losing seasons. 2 trips to the NCAA Regionals. 1 conference title. Murakami had just 1 losing season since 1975, 12 trips to the Regionals, 1 CWS appearance losing in the title game, and 6 conference titles. I don’t think we have been very strong recruiting since the Murakami days. But…his team fundraising kickoff dinner is 2nd only to the pigskin pigout for football, and Hawaii has been in the top 20 for attendance nationally for about the past 10 years. So I’m not certain who would be there to take over. Baseball seems to be paying its own bills.
What about his two major league cardinal infielder UH grads ? Baseball is a tough game and constant winning seasons is not a gimme.
Top recruits often bought out and never make it here.
OMG, we have to endure his bs rhetoric yet again? The king of bs resumes his position in the dugout toilet stall.
Continuous loosing conference record, mediocrity being rewarded? How, why? So many injured pitchers. Hoping if Trepasso’s performance is the same this season, that Maitlin has the brains and balls to cut him loose.
Is it because colleges normally don’t have a coach work without a contract which could effect recruiting.
