Honolulu native Seth Moniz was the breakout performer of the day at the Volcom Pipe Pro at Haleiwa on Saturday. The 19-year-old ousted 11-time world champion and defending champion Kelly Slater with a round-three score of 17.17 compared to Slater’s 13.06.
Kauai’s Bruce Irons had the highest single wave score of the day with a 9.67.
Current world champion and North Shore native John John Florence started the round with a 7.93 and closed it out with an 8.60.
Grand Slam celebration set for Feb. 12
Many items are available for bid at the University of Hawaii baseball team’s 15th Grand Slam Celebration on Feb. 12.
Tickets for the event in the Stan Sheriff Center are priced at $100 per person and $1,250 for a table for 10. Proceeds help pay for the Rainbow Warriors’ summer school, extra equipment, the program’s operational expenses, and cost-of-attendance allocation.
The Grand Slam will include food from eight restaurants; wine, beer and soda from four beverage companies, and a musical performance from Imua.
UH coach Mike Trapasso said auction items include travel packages to the neighbor islands and Las Vegas, a pig dinner for 40 during a UH game, travel, hotel accommodations and owner’s seats to a San Fransisco Giants game.

UH splits at Stanford Invitational
The No. 8 University of Hawaii water polo team opened the Stanford Invitational with a 9-8 win over No. 6 UC Irvine and a 12-5 loss to the host and top-ranked Cardinal on Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.
Hawaii junior Claire Nixon’s tie-breaking goal with 1:20 left in the fourth period pushed the Rainbow Wahine (5-3) past Big West rival UCI. Chloe Barr and Irene Gonzalez led UH with three goals each. Nixon scored twice and Carla Abellan added one goal.
Stanford scored three goals in each period against UH, with Makenzie Fisher leading the Cardinal with three.
UH faces Loyola Marymount in its first match today with a pool match to follow.
Texas Tech wins Amer Ari Invitational
Texas Tech captured the team title at the Amer Ari Invitational, while host Hawaii finished 17th in the men’s golf tournament at the Waikoloa Kings Course.
Texas Tech finished with a three-round score of 44-under-par 820, eight shots ahead of runner-up USC.
USC’s Rico Hoey, Arizona State’s Jared du Toit and Texas Tech’s Fredrik Nilehn tied for first in the individual standings at 16 under. Punahou graduate and USC freshman Kyle Suppa finished 19th at 7 under. Pono Tokioka led UH at 1 under and tied for 45th.
No. 6 Hawaii Pacific holds on
Senior guard Connor Looney went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 11 seconds as the No. 6 Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team held on to defeat Concordia (Calif.) 87-83 at CU Arena in Irvine, Calif.
The Sharks (21-1, 13-1 PacWest) were led by Looney’s 27 points and stand alone in first place in the PacWest. The Eagles (13-9, 9-5) were paced by Tad Dufelmeier’s 23 points.

The Sharks (14-4, 11-2) were led by freshman Danielle Iwami, who knocked down six 3-pointers for a team-high 18 points and three assists. The Eagles (8-12, 6-8) got 22 points from Montana Walters and a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds from Ugochi Anudokem.
>> The Chaminade men’s basketball team closed out its 10-day, four-game road trip with a 102-66 loss to Dixie State in St. George, Utah, at Burns Arena.
Rohndell Goodwin had 23 points to lead the Silverswords, who dropped to 15-9 overall and 11-6 in conference play. Zac Hunter led the Trailblazers (16-5, 13-2) with 19 points. They improved to 10-0 at home this season.

Lilia Maio tied her season high with 24 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Silverswords, who fell to 3-18 overall and 3-14 in the PacWest. Ali Franks led DSU (4-17, 4-11) with 15 points.
>> The BYU-Hawaii women’s basketball team fell 107-75 to California Baptist on Saturday at the Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif. Kirstin Baldwin led the Seasiders (8-11, 5-8) with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Kamille Diaz led the Lancers (24-2, 15-0) with a game-high 25 points.
>> In the men’s matchup, the Lancers handled the Seasiders in a 101-86 win. Tanner Nelson led BYUH (5-15, 3-11) with 28 points, but the Seasiders were outdone by Michael Smith’s game-high 33 points to lead Cal Baptist (21-2, 13-2).
HPU closes out Augustana with win
Hawai’i Pacific pitcher Blake Flint scattered three hits in eight innings and reliever Van Stone pitched a perfect ninth as the Sharks shut out Augustana (S.D.) 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Hans L’Orange Field.
The Sharks (4-1) closed a five-game season-opening series with the Vikings (1-4).
The Sharks next take on Philadelphia Sciences on Feb. 17 to start a three-game series.

Coolen and Garcia to speak at QB Club
Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen and Positive Coaching Alliance executive director Jeaney Garcia will be the next speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club for Monday’s luncheon.
Coolen’s 26th season at the helm begins on Thursday at the Paradise Classic at the Rainbow Softball Stadium. He is the winningest coach in the 32-year history of the program with a 921-548-1 record. The Rainbow Wahine were selected by coaches to finish fifth in the Big West this season.
Garcia’s career has spanned more than 30 years as a coach, teacher, official and administrator.
