Fire investigators have determined a fire at a McCully-Moiliili duplex started accidentally.
Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said that at approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday a resident at 2275 Date St. inadvertently turned the stove on when a backpack he was wearing bumped into a control knob as he was moving around the kitchen.
The stove ignited some items placed nearby.
Jenkins said two residents who were home at the time were alerted to the fire when they smelled smoke. They escaped through a window. Damage to the structure and its contents is estimated at $95,000.
Jenkins reminded residents to install a smoke alarm in their homes. “If they had a smoke alarm, it would’ve alerted them earlier to the fire,” he said.
