Lois Manin has been promoted to the University of Hawaii’s assistant athletic director/chief of staff, the school has announced.
She served as director of operations for the Rainbow Warriors’ football team this past season. She previously worked as the deputy manager at Aloha Stadium.
Jimmy Morimoto, who served as director of player personnel at Fresno State and UNLV the past several years, has been named UH’s director of football operations.
“I’ve known about Jimmy for a long time, from his time at UNLV to Fresno State,” coach Nick Rolovich said in a news release. “He has a good reputation around the league, and his familiarity with the Mountain West will be valuable to us. He’s a local boy coming home who I feel will help our program get better.”
Morimoto, who was born on Maui, is a Baldwin graduate who coached at his alma mater for 15 seasons, the last two as head coach.
Hawaii stays at No. 5 in volleyball poll
Hawaii remained No. 5 for the third consecutive week in the AVCA Men’s Volleyball Division I-II Top 15.
The top two teams also stayed put in Monday’s rankings with Ohio State (9-0) a unanimous No. 1 and UCLA (9-1) No. 2. Long Beach State (7-2) and BYU (7-2) traded places, the 49ers to No. 3 and the Cougars to No. 4.
Hawaii hosts UC Santa Barbara (6-3) in two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches on Friday and Saturday, both at 7 p.m. The Rainbow Warriors are 1-2 in the MPSF, the Gauchos 3-3.
Punahou’s Lehl wins Gatorade honor
Punahou senior Connor Lehl was named Gatorade Hawaii Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year on Monday. Lehl won the state meet in October with a time of 17 minutes, 42.34 seconds.
Lehl was the top Hawaii finisher at the Nike Cross Nationals Northwest Regional championships, placing 106th. He didn’t lose to a runner from a Hawaii school during the fall season.
With the honor, Lehl will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.
Chaminade’s Castro earns PacWest honors
Chaminade guard Destiny Castro was named Pacific West Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for her performance from Jan. 23 to 29, announced Monday. This is the fourth time Castro received the weekly honor.
The Guam native recorded two double-doubles, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Castro finished with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in a win over Holy Names on Jan. 23.
Silverswords split on the road
The Chaminade men’s basketball team defeated Azusa Pacific 83-71 on Monday in Azusa, Calif. Kiran Shastri scored a team-high 18 points for the Silverswords (14-8, 10-5 PacWest), followed by Rohndell Goodwin’s 17-point performance off the bench. Austin Pope also helped the Silverswords with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Corey Langerveld scored a game-high 21 points for the Cougars (10-13, 5-8 PacWest).
