U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz supports legislation that would block President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration.
Schatz said in a news release that he supports legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) that would withhold funding for enforcement and claim the order is a violation of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act.
“I am pleased to support Senator Murphy’s legislation to reverse the travel ban on people from Muslim-majority countries,” Schatz said.
The order temporarily suspends the U.S. refugee program and bars immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries, and Schatz also spoke against it in a speech on the Senate floor Monday.
“Today, on the 98th birthday of Fred Korematsu, an outspoken voice against Japanese internment and an American hero, I called on all of my colleagues to stand against President Trump’s Muslim ban,” he said.
The president has insisted that the move is aimed at protecting the nation against terrorists and isn’t a “Muslim ban” because it does not include all majority-Muslim countries.
But Hawaii’s U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono issued a statement Monday insisting the order amounts to that, and “demanding” that the order “establishing a Muslim ban” be rescinded.
“Donald Trump can deny it all he wants, but we understand him loud and clear. This is a Muslim ban, and it’s deeply wrong,” Hirono said. “If we don’t speak out against Trump’s Muslim ban now, we will be complicit in what comes next. President Trump must rescind this despicable, immoral executive order immediately.”
