The National Weather Service today issued a high surf warning for north and west facing shores of Oahu, Niihau, Kauai and Molokai and north facing shores of Maui until 6 p.m. tomorrow. A high surf advisory is in effect for east facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. tonight.

Due to a large north-northwest swell, which will reinforce a lingering northwest swell, surf is expected to be between 15 and 20 feet along north and west facing shores of Niihau and Kauai and north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui and will rise to between 20 and 30 feet later today through tomorrow, well above warning-level criteria, weather officials said.

Surf along west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai are expected to be between 8 and 12 feet, rising to between 15 and 20 feet later today.

On the Big Island, surf is expected to be between 5 and 8 feet along east facing shores through this afternoon.

Officials also expect high impacts with very strong breaking waves, longshore and rip currents with the possibility of overwash onto vulnerable roadways, especially around high tide.

The public is urged to take precautions, as large breaking surf, significant shorebreak and dangerous currents could make entering the water hazardous.
