Two people died and another was left in critical condition late last week in ocean-related incidents off Maui.

On Saturday, the Coast Guard recovered the body of a 48-year-old fisherman who disappeared after falling into the ocean from a rock formation off South Maui on Friday night, Maui firefighters said.

At about 9:22 a.m., the Coast Guard found the man’s body floating about a mile west from where he fell into the water and about 1.5 miles offshore, said Maui Fire Department spokesman Edward Taomoto.

Firefighters first responded to a call about the missing fisherman at about 11:20 p.m. Friday in the Kahikinui area near the Pokowai Sea Arch. Firefighters spoke with the victim’s fishing partner, who said the man fell about 10 feet from the rocks where they were fishing and could not climb back up.

An initial search by firefighters was unsuccessful.

On Thursday, Maui firefighters responded at 11:18 a.m. to a call of a woman pulled from Poolenalena Beach, also known as Chang’s Beach in Makena, according to the department. The woman, a visitor in her 60s whose hometown was not available, was reportedly standing in the water near the shore when high waves hit.

She died at the scene.

At 10:44 a.m. Thursday, a male visitor, 76, got into trouble in the ocean off the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Firefighters took over CPR from two bystanders, according to the department.

The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
