No. 1 Maryknoll claimed its third consecutive ILH girls basketball championship with the four-quarters effort coach Chico Furtado was looking for.
The Spartans held Kamehameha to two field goals in the second half — none by the starting unit — and Rhianne Omori had a game-high 13 points to power host Maryknoll to a 45-24 victory over the Warriors in the ILH tournament final on Thursday.
Maryknoll earned a first-round bye in the state tournament next week and avenged its only loss of the regular season to Kamehameha — a 46-45 defeat last Saturday.
“They were very upset (about the loss),” Spartans coach Chico Furtado said. “We looked at the way we played — the way we melted down in the fourth (quarter) — and we said we were not going to let that happen again.”
Maryknoll (13-1) blew a 10-point lead in that game and was up 34-21 to start the fourth quarter on Thursday.
This time around, the Spartans outscored the Warriors 11-3 and held Kamehameha to 13 percent (2-for-16) shooting in the second half.
“Sometimes when you have horses you have to cut them loose,” Furtado said. “Sometimes when you have leads late in the fourth quarter as coaches we try to protect and harness but you can not put stallions in corrals.”
Sophomore post Kalina Obrey was the only player to make more than one basket for Kamehameha (9-5) and finished with eight points and five rebounds.
The Warriors clinched their first state tourney appearance since they won it all in 2013 on Wednesday in a grueling overtime victory over ‘Iolani.
“Take nothing away from (Maryknoll). They played well,” Kamehameha coach Joe Cho said. “It was natural for us to have a little letdown, but we got our goal — it was to get to state — and I really believe we will see them again next Saturday night.”
Maryknoll responded with a 9-0 run after Kamehameha took its only lead of the game early in the first quarter.
The Spartans led by as many as 11 in the first half, but gave up a 3-pointer to Jewel Paaluhi-Caulk and a putback by Obrey to see their lead dwindle to 20-15 at the break.
Maryknoll made all six of its field goals from inside the paint in the third quarter and Omori drove for a layup with four seconds on the clock to lead 34-21 after three.
Chayse Milne made two quick buckets to start the fourth quarter and Dakota Viena nailed a 3-pointer to make it a 20-point lead with 5:21 remaining.
Kamehameha brought in its subs soon after that to finish the game out.
Maryknoll became the first team to win three straight ILH girls basketball titles since Punahou won four in a row from 2008 to ’11.
“We’ve been building this team since freshman year,” said Omori, a junior. We’ve been working so hard and we’ve accomplished so much. It’s been good teamwork.”
