The Hawaii Hilo softball team was picked to finish fifth in the Pacific West Conference preseason coaches poll, which was released Wednesday.
The Vulcans were picked highest out of the four Hawaii PacWest teams. Hawaii Pacific was picked to finish seventh, Chaminade 10th, and BYU-Hawaii was selected to finish last at 12th. California Baptist was picked to finish at the top of the conference.
Barr named Big West Player of the Week
Hawaii junior Chloe Barr’s nine goals in five matches last weekend earned her the Big West women’s water polo player of the week award on Wednesday.
Barr, the 2015 Big West Player of the Year, redshirted last season and scored four goals in UH’s season-opening win over Pacific last Friday at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. She followed with two goals in wins over UC San Diego and Marist and added another in a loss to Indiana.
UH went 3-2 in the tournament and dropped three spots into a tie for eighth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Varsity Top 25 poll.
UH to host strength and conditioning clinic
Coaches from college programs and professional organizations are among the featured speakers at the Hawaii Strength Clinic set for Friday and Saturday at the University of Hawaii Training Complex.
The clinic starts at 6 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The speaking schedule includes Megan Young, Auburn assistant strength coach, and Anthony Glass, Ohio State’s director of strength and conditioning for Olympic sports.
Carl Kochan, head strength and conditioning Coach with the San Francisco Giants, an d Lee Clark of the Newcastle Knights National Rugby are also scheduled as well as local trainers and doctors.
