Hawaii volleyball beats UC Irvine to end skid
Sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg put down a season-high 19 kills and No. 5 Hawaii snapped a two-match losing streak when turning back No. 6 UC Irvine 25-16, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match tonight in Irvine, Calif.
Senior hitter Kupono Fey added 10 kills and the Rainbow Warriors (6-2, 1-2 MPSF) outblocked the Anteaters (6-2, 3-2) 13-9. A night after having no blocks and no aces in being swept at Long Beach State, Hawaii had seven aces to UCI’s five.
Senior hitter Thomas Hodges led the Anteaters with 21 kills and senior opposite Tamier Hershko added 10.
The Warriors return home to host Grand View (Iowa) in nonconference matches on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m.
