Running and gunning is what Kapolei is all about on offense and Mililani just couldn’t keep up Thursday night.
The Hurricanes’ pack of speedsters proved to be fast enough to get back on defense, where they clogged the lanes with a zone setup and paved the way for a 58-34 victory over the host Trojans.
With the win, No. 10 Kapolei improved to 8-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West and kept pace with Leilehua at the top of the division.
“I’m not looking ahead to Leilehua yet,” Kapolei coach Gary Ellison said about the Jan. 27 matchup. “We’re looking at Radford (3-5, on Wednesday) next.”
Mililani (5-3) grabbed a 4-0 lead, but lost it on the Hurricanes’ 13-8 run to close out the quarter up 13-12. Isiah Higa had two 3-pointers among his 10 first-quarter points as Kapolei took control. Higa finished with a game-high 18 points.
The athletic Ja’Shon Carter got more into the scoring act in the second quarter for the westside boys, scoring six points, all on the fast break, as the lead got up to 29-20 at the half. All the while, the ballhawking Hurricanes’ team defense bothered Mililani’s half-court offense and didn’t yield much, either inside or out. Trojans center Kaleo Pogue managed to get inside for nine first-half points, but the team was lacking offensively everywhere else.
The 6-foot-4 Zoar Nedd, who had 10 points for Kapolei, was a big leader at both ends of the court as the Hurricanes pulled away for a 43-28 lead after three quarters.
The fast-breaking didn’t stop and Mililani could only get two 3-pointers from Jalen Miller in the final eight minutes.
“It’s not so much running; it’s just what they gave us and we took advantage of it,” Ellison said. “That’s the whole key. Gotta get back on defense. It’s always good to be undefeated. But it’s just a record. We have other goals that we want to accomplish, like getting our half-court offense better on both offense and defense.”
Added Nedd: “The coaches are always telling us to get better on defense. We want to keep teams under 40 points and if it’s over that, it’s a bad defensive game for us. That’s what coach challenged us to do tonight and we held them to 34.”
Ellison called Nedd the most versatile player on the team.
“We move him around, guard, forward,” the coach said. “He can push it, bring it back, slow it down. We use all his assets, everything he’s got.”
