Hawaii’s Kai Lenny won both his heats in 20-foot swells Thursday at the World Surf League Sunset Open at Sunset Beach.
Lenny claimed his first-round heat with a two-wave score of 13.25 and his second-round heat with a 13.50 in the Men’s Qualifying Series 1,000 event.
Other Hawaii surfers winning in the first round were Anthony Walsh (12.50), Barron Mamiya (11.15) and Robert Grilho III (5.25).
Local surfers who also claimed their second-round heats were Coconut Willie (12.75), Kekoa Bacalso (8.90), Luke Adolfson (8.75) and Jason Shibata (6.15). Five second-round heats were not completed.
Silversword men knock off Seasiders
Kiran Shastri scored 20 points and Austin Pope added 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Chaminade men’s basketball team beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 81-74 on Thursday at McCabe Gym.
Rohndell Goodwin contributed 14 points for the Silverswords (12-7, 8-4 PacWest)
Caeleb Roney had 16 points and Denhym Brooke had 12 rebounds for the Seasiders (4-12, 2-8).
BYU-Hawaii women topple Chaminade
Kristin Baldwin had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Marian Sheikh added 14 points as the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s basketball team beat Chaminade 71-67 on Thursday at McCabe Gym.
Safia Sheikh and Mata Tonga both added 12 points for the Seasiders (7-8, 4-5 PacWest).
Lilia Maio scored 17 points for the Silverswords (2-14, 2-10).
