Lowe’s announces nearly 2,400 layoffs for full-time workers

A shopper exited the Lowe’s home improvement center in Springfield, Ill. in July 2009. The North Carolina-based home improvement retailer said it’s told approximately 2,400 full-time workers that they will be laid off.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. >> North Carolina-based home improvement retailer Lowe’s says it’s told approximately 2,400 full-time workers that they will be laid off.

A statement from the store said the majority of the cuts are at the store level, with other cuts occurring at distribution centers, customer support centers and vice presidents at the company’s corporate office in Mooresville.

The company said it’s providing severance and outplacement resources to displaced workers.

Lowe’s CEO Robert Niblock told employees in an email that the changes “will better align store staffing with customer demand, shift resources from back-of-the-store activities to customer-facing ones, and enhance our efficiency and productivity.”

Lowe’s also announced Bob Hull was retiring as its chief financial officer. Marshall Croom, who has been with Lowe’s for two decades, will succeed Hull as CFO March 3.

    Lowes Hawaii appears to be poorly managed as well. Poor, sub-par products, poorly trained and unmotivated sales force, etc.

      I agree, last purchase I made there was a nightmare in terms of the service I received, I had a $50.00 Lowes card to burn up or I would have shopped elsewhere.

        more part timers coming soon.

        brick and mortar stores will soon be a thing of the past.

          You are Right I see some of our local companies going the same way.
          Too much inter net shopping with free shipping. Local companies will get smaller.

          This isn’t correct, of course. Lowe’s doesn’t pay their staff at minimum wage.

      I prefer City Mill for helpful employees. Home Depot and Lowes have too many employees roaming around outside of their areas of expertise and those who are in the area they are supposed to be seem unable to handle a sufficient number of customers at the same time.

    Lowes can’t beat Home Depot for service and knowledge at least for me.

    Weird how all these cuts are taking place, yet they just opened a multi-million dollar store on Maui!

    Why go to Lowes when you can go to Home Depot. I recently did a renovation and bought nearly all my stuff at HD. I also checked out Lowes but their selection couldn’t match HD. Pricing was either the same or a little higher for the same item. Lowes seemed like a ghost town compared to HD.

    If Donald J jumps in to take all the credit for every job-increasing event that happens (even if he didn’t have anything to do with it), shouldn’t he take all the blame for this big layoff? Isn’t it ALL his fault???

    A few years ago I was at Lowe’s looking to purchase a dryer and washer. A nice male sales associate quickly asked if I needed help. Great I thought. I’m off to a good start. I asked if they price matched. He wasn’t sure so he asked the other sales guy helping another customer right next to us. The other guy says yes, just need manager approval. My sales guy turns to me and says, sorry we don’t price match! Off to Home Depot I went! Got a terrific deal from a savvy sales associate. Thanks HD!
