Justin Thomas wins Sony, sets PGA Tour scoring record
Justin Thomas closed out one of the finest one-two punches in the history of Hawaii golf with a final-round 65 to set the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record by one shot to win the Sony Open in Hawaii today with a blistering 72-hole total of 27-under 253.
“That’s awesome,” Thomas said of the record. “It has been an unbelievable two weeks.”
Tommy Armour set the 254 mark at the Valero Texas Open in 2003. Thomas also beat 2013 Sony Open winner Russell Henley’s 24-under mark by three shots and became the first golfer since Ernie Els in 2003 to win the SBS Tournament of Champions on Maui and the Sony Open on Oahu back-to-back.
Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose (64) finished alone in second with a birdie at the last to shoot a 20-under 260 to equal what 2016 champion Fabian Gomez managed in his playoff win. Two-time major winner Jordan Spieth closed with a 63 to finish alone in third for the second straight week at 19-under 261.
Thomas opened with an eagle chip-in at No. 10 on Thursday en route to shooting only the eighth sub-60 round in tour history with an 11-under 59 and closed with a birdie at the 18th today to shoot 65. His four rounds were 59, 64, 65, 65. He heard someone tell him in the press conference on Friday that he had to go 10 under for the weekend to seal the deal and that’s exactly what he did.
