The Chinese Chamber of Commerce crowned Lesly Lan Yin Goo as the 68th Narcissus Queen on Jan. 7.
She triumphed over 13 other contestants at the historic Hawaii Theatre. Goo is the founder of Tahiti Toa School of Dance and a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines.
The Narcissus pageant awards scholarships to participants who are judged on interview skills, talent, Chinese evening gown and speech. During her reign, Goo will visit China with the Chinese Chamber president.
The chamber created the event to preserve and showcase Chinese art and culture — the narcissus flower was chosen to be the namesake of the festival because it symbolizes good luck and promise in association with the lunar new year.
Goo and her court will appear at the Chinese New Year celebration in Chinatown in late January. The chamber said the Coronation Ball for Goo’s official crowning will be held Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. Tickets cost $88 a person.
