Ko Olina pipeline causes another sewage spill
A sewage spill involving the same Ko Olina force main line that broke in November was reported to city officials this morning.
The leak has been contained and a repair crew is on the way, city Environmental Services Director Lori Kahikina told reporters about 11 a.m. The spill was reported to city officials around 8 a.m. but it’s unclear when it began, she said.
The spill is not affecting the nearby Ko Olina Golf Course and is not threatening any waterways, Kahikina said. The immediate area was cordoned off.
The amount of untreated effluent spilled is also unknown, but is greater than 1,000 gallons, she said.
The November incident resulted in approximately 200,000 gallons being spilled onto about 1.5 acres of vacant land and did not affect the golf course or nearby waterways.

Honolulu could have chosen to support the economy and to deal with long term and very serious infrastructure problems. Instead, we got the corrupt rail to nowhere that will haunt Honolulu’s finances for decades to come. And, the infrastructure problems continue to mount.
Funding for infrastructure comes from the City General Fund. The local portion of the rail funding comes from the GET surcharge, which has no affect whatsoever on the General Fund Revenues. Not building rail would have not added a cent to the General Fund or provided more revenue for sewer upgrades.
Thank goodness nothing went on the golf course.
This is nothing compared to what will happen once all those condos are built without adequate facilities to service all the new homes.

Should have had those developers upgrade the system prior to signing papers & proceeding with the massive expansion. Kakaako is getting their share of water breaks & it’s going to get worse with every new condo.

Why doesn’t the city require the developers to upgrade infrastructure as part of their building? Ko Olina is a sewage mess, Kakaako is destroying the water lines shutting down Ward, rail is causing issues with HECO lines and a huge waterline that they cannot build on. Who are the brains in our city to approve all of these permits without any care or concern for infrastructure?
Oil companies and politicians pushing the North Dakota pipeline should take note, pipelines are not safe, nor secure.

Blame the city council for granting permits to developers without checking if the infrastructure can handle new development. Have the developers replace the whole sewer line if they want their hotel and condos not the taxpayer.
City council didn’t want to jeopardize the campaign contributions from the developer. Cause and effect, more requirements placed on the developer reduces their campaign contributions.
Bingo!! Or their chances of receiving benefits, including condo, at the resort.
With these sewer line spills and breaking, why is the City keep approving more resorts and residential homes?
