Mariota shows up at practice 2 days after surgery

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota (8) walks back to the huddle after a play during the first half of an NFL football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla., Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016.

Cast and all, quarterback Marcus Mariota attended the Tennessee Titans’ practice today in Nashville, two days after surgery for a fractured fibula.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” head coach Mike Mularkey told reporters at a post-practice press conference. “I wish he was dressed a little warmer, but it doesn’t surprise me.”

It was 44 degrees at the Titans’ morning practice for Sunday’s game against Houston when Mariota arrived from Charlotte, N.C., where he had surgery Wednesday.

He suffered the fracture after being sacked in Saturday’s loss to Jacksonville and is expected to be out four months or more but back for training camp in July.

“I know he wanted to finish the season with his teammates,” Mularkey said. “The only way he can finish it now is to be out here and be in meetings. We want him around. He’s a large reason we’ve had some success this year.”

Asked if there was even a possibility that Mariota would not be at the game, Mularkey said, “I asked him (and) before I could get the whole question out, he was, ‘I’ll be there.’ It doesn’t surprise me.”

Mularkey said Mariota will probably not be on the sideline Sunday. “I’ll have to make that decision,” Mularkey said. I haven’t made that decision, but he is going to be at the game.”

Way to go, Marcus. No surprise. Even if he all bus’ up, he’s there to back up the Titans. Like they say, “There’s no ‘I’ in TEAM.” Hope all goes well with recovery and rehab. We’ll be watching you next season. Good luck…
