Kayla Torres scored 12 points and Kalena Gibson added 10 as No. 7 Mililani outlasted previously unbeaten Radford 40-29 on Thursday night at the Trojans’ gym.
Gibson added five rebounds and four steals, while Hope Carter hustled for eight points and six boards. Center Cheyenne Ardona added five rebounds for the front court.
The win boosted Mililani to 5-1 in Oahu Interscholastic Association West play, dropping Radford to 4-1. It was a heartbreaker for the Lady Rams, who saw center Shaelie Burgess go down with a knee injury with 4:30 to go in the first quarter. She collided with Mililani forward Janae Ritchie under the basket and went down immediately.
“The trainer said it might be a partial tear,” Radford coach Charles Chong said. “We’re just keeping her in our prayers.”
Burgess, a 6-foot senior, had worked hard in the offseason to become a force on both ends of the court for Radford. She happened to go down on the same floor where former Mililani standout Shantel Appleby suffered knee injuries as a junior and senior.
“I know exactly what she’s going through, and what she means to their team and program. She reminds me of Shantel,” Mililani coach Patrick Basilio said.
Natalie Jackson led the Lady Rams with 11 points, five rebounds and three dimes. No other Ram scored more than four points on a night when their go-to standout was unavailable. Often, the Rams looked lost without her, but by the end of the third quarter, they scrapped their way back within 25-21 on a wing jumper by Aimee Chock and a fast-break bucket by Salara Dill.
The start of the fourth quarter, though, belonged to the home team. Gibson scored on a foul-line jumper on a pass from point guard Dahlis Sablay and again on a layup as Mililani pulled away with a 12-4 run. After Carter (eight points) hit a layup, the Trojans led 37-25 with three minutes left. Radford got no closer than eight the rest of the night.
Mililani used a fullcourt press to rattle the Rams just a bit in the second quarter. Radford finished with 18 turnovers, including seven in the second.
Appleby, who made a full recovery from her injuries, worked out with the Lady Trojans’ scout team this week and hopes to walk on at Northern Arizona.
“Coach worked us hard at practice,” Carter said. “We got ready to front (Burgess), defend the back side. He said don’t take the other players lightly, too, especially No. 2 (Jackson). It was about heart and keeping our momentum going.”
