Kaiwi Scenic Shoreline offers sunrise hike to start 2017
Hundreds of hikers will be up before dawn once again on New Year’s Day for the annual First Day Hike along the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline.
The First Day Hike program is held in state parks around the United States in an effort to encourage their use and promote a healthy lifestyle. The two-mile Makapuu Lighthouse Trail takes visitors uphill to a 500-foot elevation with sweeping views of the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, which can include migrating humpback whales during the winter months. (Note: no running water or restrooms are available along the trail.)
As in previous years, this weekend’s First Day Hike on Oahu will feature an opening pule, or prayer, conch shell ceremony and taiko drumming performance. Gates to the trail parking lot will open at 5:30 a.m. Jan. 1; the general public is advised to arrive early to find parking and hike to the trail summit before sunrise at 7:09 a.m.

Early might not be early enough.
Don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle, you’ll return from the hike to find your car in a pool of smashed glass and your valuables gone. If you don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle, the thugs will smash your windows just for spite.
Roll down the windows.
