Titans lose QB Marcus Mariota to broken right leg
Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota broke his right leg in a loss to the Jaguars, ending his season early for a second straight year.
And Mariota was just one of the quarterbacks knocked out of games with injuries today. Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III went to the locker room with a concussion as Cleveland got its first win this season, while Jets quarterback Bryce Petty hurt his left shoulder in a loss to New England.
Mariota was hurt when sacked late in the third quarter by rookie Sheldon Day with the Titans quarterback scrambling to throw on first down. Day grabbed Mariota around the ankles, and the quarterback stayed down, immediately signaling to the sideline.
The quarterback, who missed the final two games of the 2015 season with a sprained knee, pounded on the ground several times.
Trainers placed an air cast on his right leg before Mariota was lifted onto a cart and taken to the locker room.
Titans coach Mike Mularkey said Mariota will need at least six weeks to recover. That leaves veteran Matt Cassel as Tennessee’s quarterback after a 38-17 loss that severely damaged Tennessee’s playoff hopes.

The Jaguars had both running backs T.J. Yeldon (ankle) and Chris Ivory (hamstring) leave the game with injuries.
Cleveland ended its winless skid, beating San Diego 20-17. Yet Griffin was taken to the locker room with a concussion after being sacked for the seventh time.
Griffin, who was replaced by rookie Cody Kessler, already missed 11 games this season with a broken bone in his left shoulder.
Browns cornerback Joe Haden also went to the locker room with an injured neck, the two-time Pro Bowler hurt apparently while tackling on a running play.
San Diego linebacker Denzel Perryman had a leg injury in the fourth quarter and was taken from the field on a cart.
Petty hurt his left shoulder in a 41-3 loss to New England, a week after bruising his chest in the Jets’ loss to Miami.
The Jets also lost tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to an injured hamstring in the first half, and he did not return. Runnng back Khiry Robinson finally was active for the first time this season and left with a leg injury.
Defensive lineman Leonard Williams returned after leaving the game in the third quarter with an injured chest.
The Green Bay Packers got a brief scare in the third quarter when quarterback Aaron Rodgers stayed down on the ground for a couple of minutes after a sack.
Trainers checked Rodgers, who walked to the bench where he flexed his neck. He returned on the next series.
But Packers cornerback LaDarius Gunter left with an injured elbow in the second quarter, while right tackle Bryan Bulaga hurt his shoulder in the fourth.

Turn out the lights, the playoffs is over…Hope you recover soon, Marcus. Hope it’s only a sprain, not more serious. O-line giving up sacks to Mariota and Cassel today. Pass defense still junk. Bortles passed for 200+ yards in first half. Over 300 so far in the game. Bortles even CAUGHT a TD pass. What happened today?
Prayers for a safe and quick recovery for a really good person that hawaii can be proud of. He has a solid moral core.
Sorry to hear this. He seems to be one of the really good guys.
Too bad. Potential injury is always a concern and the reason why many NFL stars decline playing in the Pro Bowl game.
Dangerous gladiator sport. All for greed. On all sides of the sports business. Not any different than boxing. Risk your health for money and the enjoyment of others. Spartan entertainment.
true..college football is a real disgrace
Tennessee played terrible from the get go.
Hope he recovers quickly. Injuries are always part of this game.
Titans could use better coaches
Just read that Marcus is out for the season. Broken right fibula. Hard luck, Marcus. O-line been doing a good job protecting you lately, but today was horrors. Only one game to go, and you’re an alternate for Pro Bowl, with chance to play, but… Hope you heal and rehab fast for next season. Still a big fan of yours. Good luck.
Such a pity. Many offensive linemen are the least athletic on the field. Yet they protect the most valuable.
Carr from Oakland ended his season today with same injury as Mariota.
Also Tyler Lockett from Seahawks broke his leg after getting tackled. Lots of serious season ending injuries today.
Bad things happen in threes.
Mariota has not only talent but class and humility as well. Injuries like this are just a temporary setback, because a guy who gives and receives respect the way he does will always have major opportunities ahead. I’m not even a big football fan but I’ll always tune in when either Marcus or Russell Wilson are playing.
Two guys who embody not only what sportsmanship is about, but set an example for every kid in America to follow. Be humble, be proud, be respectful, and be a role model. In an age with crybabies like Cam Newton and pieces of dog**** like Kaepernick, our kids need good folks to emulate.
Marcus will be fine, and Hawaii is lucky to have him as a representative of our state.
Excellent comments on Marcus Mariota and right on in your assessment of Cammy a.k.a. crybaby and that piece of @#$% Kaepernick.
