An Oahu grand jury has indicted a 37-year-old Waimanalo man for allegedly burglarizing three homes and for an alleged robbery and an attempted carjacking in Kahala.
Ivan S. Kong Jr. pleaded not guilty to the charges at Circuit Court on Monday via closed-circuit video link from Oahu Community Correctional Center. His trial is set for the week of Feb. 21, and he remains in custody in lieu of $250,000 aggregate bail.
Kong’s alleged crime spree started on Kahala Avenue on Dec. 7. A resident saw her home had been broken into and confronted Kong.
Police said he assaulted her before he fled on a stolen motorcycle.
Kong then allegedly broke into a home on Makaiwa Street and attempted to steal a bicycle. A court document said a resident at a third home nearby found her garage door open when she arrived to check her residence after her home alarm was activated.
Police said she saw Kong flee from her home with a bicycle. On Makaiwa Street he jumped inside a slow-moving vehicle and on top of the motorist, who was still in the driver’s seat. He attempted to take control of the vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel.
KHON-2 reported a good Samaritan intervened and repeatedly punched Kong in the face and detained him until police arrived.
