Pier 39 fire causes $870,000 in damage

The smoke plume from a fire this morning at Pier 39 could be seen from Likelike Highway near the Kamehameha Shopping Center.
Honolulu fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed a giant forklift and prompted an evacuation of a quarter-mile area, including Piers 39 and 40.
Authorities reopened Nimitz Highway at about 9:30 a.m Monday, close to an hour and a half after firefighters responded to the the blaze.
Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said the fire caused an estimated $870,000 in damage, including the destruction of the $750,000 forklift.
Jenkins said the forklift was in the process of lifting a 5,000-gallon propane tank onto a barge when the fire occurred and the forklift operator had to abandon the forklift.
He said firefighters responded at 8:02 a.m. and were on the scene at 8:05 a.m.
Jenkins said firefighters focused on cooling the propane tank as well as putting out the fire.

He said the fire was under control by 9:13 a.m. and that no significant fuel was released into Honolulu Harbor.
Jenkins said there was also no significant leak from the propane tank.
