Honolulu police announced Wednesday they released the 26-year-old Waimanalo woman who was arrested late Monday night in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of an 8-month-old boy.
The truck also seriously injured the infant’s 3-year-old brother and his 24-year-old mother.
Police released Annie Akau on Tuesday night. She initially was arrested on suspicion of negligent injury, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, driving without a license, endangering the welfare of a minor and other offenses.
The negligent injury offense was changed to first-degree negligent homicide upon the death of the baby on Tuesday.
Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors.
Akau was driving a Chevy S10 pickup truck, heading toward Makapuu on Kalanianaole Highway about 6:46 p.m. Monday when the truck hit the family in a marked crosswalk near Oluolu Street in Waimanalo, police said.
The mother was pushing a stroller with the baby, Donovan Naleieha, inside. The baby’s father was behind them. The truck stopped roughly 60 feet past the crosswalk with the stroller underneath.
Police said Akau had her young child with her in the truck and fled the scene. Her husband, 38, arrived at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution.
The truck also sideswiped a car, whose driver had stopped for the family to cross, police said.
Police identified Akau from video surveillance obtained from 7-Eleven.
Waikiki bank robber sought
