Hawaii Pacific University guard Jordan Martin was named the Pacific West Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week on Monday and Sharks teammate Connor Looney was named Defender of the Week.
Martin averaged 19.5 points and went 7-for-12 from 3-point range in HPU’s wins over UH Hilo and Chaminade. Looney had four steals in both games and averaged 16 points.
The Sharks (8-0, 2-0 PacWest) moved up to sixth in this week’s D-II West Region Media Poll.
Academy of Art sweeps BYUH
Despite four BYU-Hawaii players scoring in double figures, the Seasiders women’s basketball team lost to Academy of Art 80-67 in a Pacific West Conference game Monday at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco.
Safia Sheikh led BYUH with 23 points and went 4-for-7 from 3-point range. But the Seasiders (2-4, 0-2 a PacWest) struggled to contain Academy of Art guard Rodericka Ware, who finished with a game-high 34 points on 12-for-25 shooting.
Academy of Art’s men’s basketball team followed with a 78-68 win over BYUH to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Tanner Nelson led BYUH (3-5, 1-1) with 17 points and Shad Watson added 14. Chris Salas led Academy of Art (2-6, 1-1) with 30 points on 10-for-16 shooting.
