Maeda out as Castle High School football coach
Nelson Maeda is out as Castle’s head football coach after 20 seasons with the Knights.
Maeda confirmed via cell phone this afternoon that it was the choice of the Castle administration. He found out that he was no longer the coach on Tuesday.
“It was not a mutual decision,” he said. “It came unexpectedly and at a late stage. It’s been seven weeks since our season ended. We were finalizing our plans for next season’s scrimmages and pass league and for offseason workouts.
“I guess there was a feeling here at Castle that we should be winning more. Hopefully for Castle, whoever they hire as the new coach can accomplish that.”
Maeda is employed as a counselor at the school. Calls to Sueyasu and the Castle administration were not immediately returned.
Maeda went 91-103 as Castle’s head coach. The Knights finished 4-5 this past season and lost to Moanalua, 49-7, in the first round of the OIA playoffs.

“Calls to Sueyasu…..” Who the heck is Sueyasu?? He/she/it was never mentioned in the article.
S/he seems to lack communication skills. Typical of most HGEA/HSTA employee. After all these years, Maeda should have been treated better.
Isn’t Maeda a union member, too? Don’t you mean “some” HGEA/HSTA” members?” But I agree, he should have been treated better, much better. Coaches at this level get very little pay and in return offer many hours of their time to the athletes.
I’ve known Nelson a long time … CLASS GUY … who does the Castle Administration think they are … Oregon ?????
How can athletic director let him go? If all the Kaneohe players stayed at home instead of being recruited to play in the ilh the team would much be better. Good luck coach.
I agree that Sueyasu could of treated Maeda better. When you coach at a school for 20 years, you deserve respect.
Another thing that irks me about her is that she limits bare bone funding to football and basketball. Also, why cant the
kids get a Castle letter after they finish their sport? Does it cost so much that you have to do away with that? The kids
spend so many hours training and practicing. Why not reward them at the end of the season?
Sueyasu was the assistant athletic director for a while at Castle, I dont know what makes her think they can hire someone else. DOE coaches get paid peanuts to coach, that why they like to hire teachers and counselors to coach. Its just an added duty for love.
Great man. Wonderful family. Fantastic role model. Ridiculous move by school.
Loved to watch his teams play on tv. And he has had some pretty good ones! Always the underdog but scrappy nonetheless. No class the way it was handled.
