University of Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai today was named to the All-Mountain West Conference first team.
In 13 games, Tavai, a second-year sophomore, amassed 118 tackles, an average of 9.1 per contest, and 7.0 sacks. In eight MW games, he had 85 tackles, an average of 10.6 per game, and 5.0 sacks.
Left tackle Dejon Allen, who moved from guard in spring training, was named to the second team.
Two omissions to the first two teams were kicker/punter Rigo Sanchez, who has converted all 12 field-goal attempts this season, and wideout Marcus Kemp, who caught 70 passes for 1,036 yards. On Sunday, Kemp won the Alec Waterhouse Award as the Rainbow Warriors’ most valuable player. Sanchez, Kemp, safety Trayvon Henderson, offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi, defensive end Meffy Koloamatangi and cornerback Jalen Rogers received honorable mention.

Can’t believe Sanchez is not AT LEAST second team! He was PERFECT in FGs and only missed one extra point, his last kick. The first team kicker is from SDSU and the seond team kicker is from AFA. Those two guys must be perfect or better!

The AFA kid missed his field goal against UH and ultimately cost his team the game. How could he possibly be ahead of Rigo?

I agree that Kemp and Sanchez should have been 1st Team, especially Sanchez. I can’t believe Dejon “Mr False Start” Allen made 2nd Team … is there a stat for who led the nation in false starts ??? My money would be on Dejon

To say Rigo Sanchez was “overlooked” for conference honors would be an outrageous use of the word.
Sanchez was simply bi-passed.
I leave it to the so called pundits to unravel this selection scam.
Sanchez simply had an outstanding season and he was Hawaii’s most consistent weapon. At home or on the road. When everyone else seemingly let down and were whipped into submission–Rigo would let loose on one of his booming punts. He was so good at kickoffs his special team coach instructed Rigo to kick it higher and allow a return. So confident was the coach that the returner would not cross the 25 yard line because of Rigo’s incredible distance and hang time.
No time for tears for Sanchez. The proof is in the pudding. And that means making an NFL roster. The frosting for any NFL team is straight line budgeting. In Rigo Sanchez, you get two for the price of one. And with his size and athletic ability he makes a great 11th man safety on kick off and punt returns. Wishing Rigo all the blessings he deserves.
