Police are looking for two suspects who robbed a 24-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman at gunpoint early Monday morning while the victims sat in their vehicle.
Police said the man and woman were parked at a scenic point in the Makiki area when one of the male suspects held a pellet gun to the male victim’s neck while the second suspect took property belonging to the pair.
The robbery occurred at about 2:45 a.m. Police have classified the case as a first-degree robbery.
Whale carcass washes up at Kaena park
State conservation officials were warning ocean users to stay clear of an area of the Kaena State Park Reserve, where a badly decomposed humpback whale washed ashore.
Officials said Monday that a number of state and federal agencies are determining what action, if any, should be taken to remove the carcass.
The carcass was first reported on shore about halfway between the Kawaula section of the park and the Kaena Point Lighthouse in a small cove. It might attract sharks, although no sharks have been seen close to the carcass, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Agencies are discussing whether to tow the carcass out to sea or leave it in place for now.
Truck and driver sought in fatal hit-and-run
Maui police are asking for help locating a blue Dodge or Chevy full-size pickup truck whose driver fled the scene of a collision on Piilani Highway on Sunday night in which a 16-year-old girl was killed. The truck is outfitted with an aftermarket lift and tires, police said.
The vehicle was traveling on Kaiwahine Street around 8:50 p.m. when it made a left turn onto Piilani Highway at the intersection with Uwapo Road in Kihei. The vehicle struck the girl in a marked crosswalk, and the driver fled, police said.
The girl was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she later died. Police are investigating whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.
The collision was Maui County’s 23rd traffic fatality of the year compared with 21 at the same time last year.

Maui hiker injured after falling onto rocks
A 38-year-old Maui resident was in serious condition with neck and back injuries after falling 20 feet onto rocks below a waterfall near Kailua in East Maui.
The Maui Fire Department reported that the man was airlifted to Maui Memorial Medical Center at about 5 p.m. Sunday, officials said. Firefighters responded shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday but had trouble finding the injured man. A caller could say only that the waterfall was near mile marker 6 of Hana Highway on the ocean side.
The victim was finally spotted at about 4:15 p.m., floating face-up in a freshwater pond about a half-mile makai of Hana Highway, near the ocean, officials said.
The department’s Air 1 helicopter lowered rescuers to the victim, who was lying at the bottom of a 60-foot waterfall. He was airlifted to a pasture near the Commando Trailhead off Hana Highway and was treated by paramedics.
Authorities said the victim and a small group of friends had hiked to the waterfall and were swimming in some ponds. The man was climbing down the side of the waterfall when he slipped. One person stayed with the victim while the rest of the party hiked out to call authorities.
