A 24-foot motor boat returning from a snorkel trip to Molokini Crater ran out of gas and ran aground on Maui’s Keawakapu Beach while trying to return to the Kihei Boat Ramp Saturday afternoon.

No one was injured.

Wailea firefighters found the boat beached and three men and two women trying to keep it from washing further onto the sand around 3:51 p.m., fire official said.

Even though the occupants deployed an anchor to keep the boat from beaching, strong winds and a current dragged it onto the beach about a quarter mile short of the boat ramp, fire official said.

The boat’s owner, a Kihei resident, got a ride from a bystander to purchase a fuel can and gas and returned to start the boat. Firefighters and bystanders helped to free the boat and a lifeguard watercraft towed it to deeper waters.
