Sabine Lisicki survived a tight first set against Veronica Cepede Royg then ran away with the second to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hawaii Open on Wednesday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Lisicki, the tournament’s fifth seed and ranked No. 93 in the world, moved on in the singles draw with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory in the second round of the Women’s Tennis Association 125K Series event. The outcome was a reversal of their previous meeting, when Cepede Royg upset Lisicki 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the French Open in May.
Lisicki will next face Jacqueline Cako, who outlasted fellow American Jamie Loeb 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Cako knocked off second-seeded Nicole Gibbs on Tuesday.
Fourth-seeded 17-year-old Catherine “Cici” Bellis, ranked 92nd by the WTA, advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over BYU-Hawaii senior Nannan (Dallas) Zhang in her first-round match. Sixth-seeded Evgeniya Rodina, Usue Maitane Arconada and wild card Katie Swan also won first-round matches.
Rain cut short the day’s schedule and the second round of singles is slated to be completed today along with the doubles quarterfinals, weather permitting.
