Rainbow Wahine edge NMSU for tourney title

Hawaii freshman Makenna Woodfolk scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter and the Rainbow Wahine basketball team edged New Mexico State 56-53 in the final of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic today at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine went 2-0 over the weekend to capture the tournament title and improved to 2-2 overall. New Mexico State also ended the tournament at 2-2 overall.

Sophomore guard Leah Salanoa led UH with 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including three 3-pointers.

Woodfolk finished with a season-high 11 points and 12 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team. Senior guard Briana Harris added 12 points and six rebounds on her way to tournament MVP honors.

Tamera Williams led NMSU with 11 points and the Aggies, the defending Western Athletic Conference champions, shot 32 percent from the field.

UH continues its homestand by hosting the Rainbow Wahine Shootout starting Friday. The Wahine will face San Jose State, Oregon and No. 10 Mississippi State in the three-day tournament.

    Congrats to Coach Beeman again, beat another team with a winning record and who went to post-season play last year. Even with a way tougher schedule, Wahine Basketball is doing well. Of course the men are 2-2 but have faced only 1 team with a winning record so far out of 10 games coming up. After UH Hilo, they fact the last place in conference last year, Troy. To say the AD’s pet has it easy two years in the row is an understatement.
