The Mililani cheerleading squad now has its own state championship to celebrate.

Mililani, a day after performing on the sidelines during the Trojans football team’s victory in the state Division I title game, won the large division (12-20 competitors) of the Zippy’s/HHSAA Cheerleading Championships on Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

“They came, they brought their ‘A’ game and they left it on the mat,” said Trojans coach Renesha Kierstedt.

Moanalua claimed the medium division (11 or fewer competitors) to cap an undefeated season. Na Menehune won the large division last season.

“The last few practices we’ve been hitting our routine pretty perfectly, so we went in pretty confident and when we went out to perform, it was pretty easy after that,” said Moanalua junior Elijah Puchert.

Mililani and Moanalua, the final two teams to perform Saturday, had competitors pounding the mat in celebration after completing their routines. They knew they nailed it.

“We never know if we have it because it’s up to the judges,” Kierstedt said. “If they leave their hearts on the mat that’s when you know they did their all.”

Na Menehune junior Mariah Tanner said: “That was the first time we hit a routine in competition. We just kind of let it out on the mat.”

Mililani scored 499.25 points in the large division, Baldwin placed second with 485.50 and Kamehameha was third with 468.50.

In the medium division, Moanalua finished with 526 points, Kaiser had 488.75 and Waiakea scored 470.75.

Radford had its 11-year run of winning either a medium or large division title come to an end.

Each squad was given 2 minutes, 30 seconds of performance time with a maximum of 90 seconds of music and a minimum of 35 seconds for cheering/chanting. Elements such as dance, tumbling and basket tosses were required.

Many of the top teams Saturday seemed to feed off the crowd.

“We can feel the energy on the mat. It’s amazing, honestly,” Tanner said.

It was Mililani’s first state crown since taking the large division in 2006-07.

When asked if it was difficult to perform a day after being at a football game, Trojans senior Emily King said: “I think we can handle anything and everything. Today was just a show of that.”

Kierstedt had daughters Sakari, a senior, and Zakia, a freshman, on the team.

“That is one of the best moments I’ve ever had in my life,” Sakari said. “It’s because I’m able to celebrate with my sister from the coaching of my mother. Being able to have that feeling is amazing.”

Moanalua coach Blossom Caballero said her team finally had a perfect performance.

“We actually went through the entire season and they dropped (a cheerleader) in every competition, so this was redemption for them,” Caballero said. “To hit on their last routine of the season was all we wanted.”
