Wahine hoops team picks up first win
The Hawaii women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season today, defeating Youngstown State 72-50 on the opening day of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH (1-2) pulled away from the Penguins with a dominant (25-10) second quarter. The Rainbow Wahine led by 19 at halftime and by as many as 22 points in the second half.
Five Wahine players scored in double figures in a well-balanced effort: Briana Harris and Lahni Salanoa scored 12; Sarah Toeaina 11 and Olivia Crawford 11; and Keleah-Aiko Koloi 10. Salanoa also grabbed 10 rebounds.
UH shot 48.2 percent from the field to 27.1 percent for YSU (0-3).
UH continues play Sunday against New Mexico State (2-1) at 4:30. The tournament title is on the line after the Aggies defeated Sacramento State prior to UH’s game.
