Lahainaluna beats Kapaa to win first state D-II title
Lahainaluna scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams to defeat Kapaa 21-14 to win its first Division II state football championship on Friday night at Aloha Stadium.
Siale Hafoka returned a blocked punt 23 yards for a score and Bailey Honda brought back an interception 55 yards for a touchdown for the Lunas (9-4), who are the first of three teams to be crowned champions in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships.
‘Iolani and Mililani played later tonight for the Division I state championship and Kahuku and Saint Louis will square off Saturday night for the Open Division title.
The Lunas were 0-3 in a state final before finally breaking through against Kapaa (8-2), which battled back from a 21-point deficit and had a chance to score on its final possession before turning the ball over on downs.
Kiliona Keohuloa added a 7-yard TD run for Lahainaluna. Kapena Texeira bullied his way for a 1-yard touchdown run for Kapaa’s first points of the game in the third quarter.

Gabe Keener caught a 32-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-18 with 7:04 left in the game to keep Kapaa in it.
