Police close section of Kona highway for further investigation into death of girl

Hawaii police closed a section of Highway 11, south of the 107-mile marker in Honaunau in South Kona today to continue their investigation on a recent fatal traffic accident.

The partial lane closure began at 9:30 a.m. and is scheduled to end at about 11:30 a.m. Motorists are advised to expect delays.

On Nov. 2, Janexty Kaaloa, 1o, was struck by a vehicle on the highway near Kaaloa’s Super J’s Authentic Hawaiian restaurant while on her way home from school.

Her family owns the restaurant and have a home behind the establishment.

Police said Kaaloa, who family members called “Ulu,” was running across the roadway when a Jeep pickup truck driven by a 61-year-old Captain Cook man traveling southbound on the highway struck her.

Kaaloa transported to Kona Community Hospital where she died.

Police arrested the pickup truck driver on suspicion of negligent homicide. He was released pending further investigation.

“For further investigation”…when translated possibly means we forgot or missed something during the day of the incident so we have to go back.
