Waikiki steakhouse named among nation’s best
Hy’s Steak House in Waikiki has been named among the 100 best steakhouses in America by OpenTable.com.
Serving customers for some four decades, Hy’s is the only entry from Hawaii. While Ruth’s Chris Steak House made the list, the chain was cited for its locations in Boston, Mass. and Midtown in New York City.
Hy’s is known for its classic style of service and table-side preparation of dishes including salads and flaming desserts, as well as entertainment by Audy Kimura.
Some 28 states are represented on the OpenTable list, with multiple states having multiple restaurants. California, Illinois and Texas each have 17 listed restaurants, while New York has 14 and Nevada has 12.
OpenTable’s unranked list was compiled from more than 5 million reviews submitted by verified users of the website between Oct. 1, 2015 and Sept. 30, 2016.
“With its long history and timeless traditions, the steakhouse occupies a special place in our nation’s dining culture,” says Caroline Potter, OpenTable chief dining officer, in a statement. “These winning restaurants are honoring those comforting — and delicious — traditions, while providing top-notch hospitality that diners want to return for again and again.”

very expensive..outrageous prices…spotty service
It ain’t pizza hut hon.
allie needs to work her part time student job for a week to afford a meal. whereas, she can eat all the pizza crusts that falls under the table for free at her job. Waikiki pizza joint > hy’s
I’m going to take a wild guess that you do not know that Allie is a HE and not a SHE. Dude… he is a guy pretending to be female. We also know that HE has been claiming to be a UH student since 2008. I think there is a good chance he is a paid flamer used to drive up impressions on the SA website.
@bobbob, that’s a terribly unkind comment from you.
The mention of “spotty service” caught my eye. In my experience, if you get great service, you don’t mind the price of yr meal so much. I haven’t been to this place yet, I do still want to go.
Apologies, HE needs to work his part time student job.
Allie was known as Alice on the Honolulu Topix forum.
She gets someone else to pay!
Umm..I still work 2 nights a week but graduated from the UH. From my FB video and postings you know I work for KS. Geesh…such anger over nothing.
Exactly. Why do you guys have to be so mean? Other people in your lives you could take the time to be nice to…but instead you felt it was more important to spend your time insulting someone over the internet.
Sizzler’s used to be good back in the 70’s.
Not my experience. My favorite restaurant in all of Oahu. EVERYTHING consistently superb and top notch.
Hard to take a place where the waiters are better dressed than the patrons are as my date, an attorney in town said.
As a paid Advertiser click baiter, you should really leave your comments in the political and editorial sections where you sound far more convincing. Leave the restaurant criticisms for Nadine.
Used to go there. I know one of the waiters. Nice guy. Like to buy good steak and do it on the grill at home.
Amen.
The waiter splashed some sauce on my pants while preparing some fancy dessert at the table. The guy didn’t even offer to pay to get them cleaned. NEVER again going to this place.
yikes..well, as Is aid, service is spotty. Food is ok but not great. Just reporting the word from the street….
I prefer Yelp. LOL
Did this place evolve from the “Hy’s Steakhouse” chain that started in Canada? Or is it just a coincidence that it has the same name and the “h” in the logo is identical?
I’ve gone to Hy’s several times over the years.
Top 100 in the country: Great for them.
Thinking of the whole country though….whoa, guess I shouldn’t expect much when I travel.
Best steakhouse I’ve ever been to is Andiamo’s in Las Vegas. It’s in The “D” on Fremont St. where Fitzgerald’s used to be.
woooohoooo!
Caviar…………$170.00
Bone In Ribeye….$75
I don’t think Hy’s s the best steakhouse on Oahu.
Who do like better? I love Hy’s but always interested in something good.
not saying better, but mortons, rc, signature are other ones off the op of my head.
If you’re dining at Hy’s, you’re not concerned with price, but rather the “experience and ambience”. Been there on occasions, it’s very nice but excellent steaks can also be had at other places, i.e. Morton’s and Ruth Chris, less pretentiousness.
Huh, I don’t find Hy’s pretentious at all, and find RC and Morton’s to be a little too chain restaurant for my taste.
Special occasions and “date night,” I like Hy’s.
To each their own though.
Agreed. If I’m spending big bucks for dinner, it’s not gonna be at a chain restaurant.
I seriously think Hy’s is a chain restaurant. There is a chain of “Hy’s Steakhouses” that began in Canada. If you look at the logo, the specially-designed “h” is identical. I think people in Hawaii, generally, don’t travel very much and maybe don’t realize what else is out there.
Here you go:

Part of a chain.
Since I’m “awaiting moderation” I’ll try again:

(Without the spaces, of course). It’s a chain.

I kinda agree actually. I do prefer those other places for most occasions. More bang for buck.
If you want bang for your buck, try the Black Angus steak house close to Pearlridge mall.
Ruth’s has the only real US Prime. Most people can’t tell the difference.
Back in the day Hy’s was the best on the Island but today there are several great steakhouses. If it’s $75 for bone-in ribeye that’s not bad. Have been to several places where the best steaks now top $100 per person. Roy’s and Ruth Chris are recent places where the top steaks were well over $100. Just couldn’t get myself to do it but I certainly wanted to try it just to see…
interesting. I have been twice but was not that impressed. OK food but overpriced.Place is dark and a little cheesy and out of date.
It’s OK not to eat steak; really, it won’t hurt at all.
I cook better steak on my weber at home over Kiawe coals, but I’m a rack of lamb diner when I do go to Hy’s.
Congrats and well earned. We love Hy’s and have enjoyed dining there over the past 20 years.
I’m dating myself here but I recall decades ago the sign outside read “Hy’s of Canada”. Is it still Canadian-owned?
I am actually very rarely impressed by the restaurants that win these fancy awards. I find the little restaurants along the road side are the best. Not fancy looking but good quality food. Anyone ever been to Serg’s in Waimanalo? Now that is good food.
