Injured hiker rescued from Koko Crater Trail
Firefighters rescued Tuesday evening an injured hiker from the Koko Crater Trail.
Fire Capt. David Jenkins said an approximately 40-year-old visitor from Oregon was hiking alone when he was injured due to an apparent fall.
Other hikers found the injured man near the summit of the trail, trying to make his way down. They saw he needed help and called 911, Jenkins said.
Fire rescue personnel were dispatched at 6:22 p.m., arrived at 6:29 p.m. and hiked up the trail. They got to the patient’s side at 6:54 p.m., treated and stabilized the patient, Jenkins said.
He was airlifted to a landing zone below and was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 7:17 p.m.
A total of five fire companies responded to the call.

And for this elaborate rescue (firefighters hiking up the mountain, five companies responded, an airlift, and EMS, HOW MUCH DID HE PAY? Oh, nothing, as far as I know. us taxpayers graciously paid all expenses.
Those firefighters get paid the same whether they are training to fight fires, playing basketball behind the fire station or rescuing hikers. Yeah, looks like too many fire stations responded to a minor accident, but I assume they are trying to justify their existence, wanting to feel they are needed by the community. Now, if firefighters were off duty, and got an emergency call while at the beach to immediately come to the station and rescue the hiker, then yeah, that would be billed to the taxpayer. I got problems when it gets dark and hikers make a call to get rescued. Just spend the night in the mountains and come out the next day.

Thank you. Before I clicked on this article, I said to myself “The first comment will be from some yoyo screeching about paying for the rescue” It’s already paid for. We call it our taxes and this is a much better use of my tax money than some things I can think of.

Not the smartest thing to do.
“A man’s gotta know his limitations”
Oh good grief! This guy was out exercising and fell. He injured himself and was trying to make it down on his own but fellow hikers called for assistance. This is not a hike that requires a hiking partner during the day . It is not remote, and heavily used. Having a hiking partner would not have made any difference.
Would you be equally indignant if someone had a heart attack brought on by a poor diet and lack of exercise?
