Custodian helps in capture of alien lizard at Makiki school
An alert custodian helped in the capture of a foot-long alien lizard at a Makiki elementary school this week.
The Madagascar giant day gecko was captured Tuesday morning at Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School, state Department of Agriculture officials said. The lizard is green with a red stripe from the nostrils to the eyes and also has orange spots on its back.
A custodian discovered the lizard, took a photograph of it, and reported it to the department’s plant quarantine inspectors, who came to the school and captured it. Agricultural officials said the lizard, an adult, lost its long tail while being captured.
Agriculture spokeswoman Janelle Saneishi said small populations of Madagascar giant geckos have been found in Hawaii and California.
She said the department doesn’t know how the lizard got there. Inspectors were continuing to conduct a survey to see if there are any others in the area.
The lizard, a native to northern and northwestern Madagascar, feeds on insects, small vertebrates, and nectar.

Cute and cuddly.
Damn, my house got a lot of them, who do I call to come eradicate these suckers, cause they bite, these suckers are not like the brown mo’o, they actually eat the mo’o. I hate them.
You may be seeing the gold dust day gecko. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_dust_day_gecko They look similar. The Madagascar gecko is very big. The gold dust gecko is slowly taking over territory of the common gecko, mainly because they gold dust will eat the babies of the other geckos!
what he said…^^^^^^^^^
These are all over the Big Island. They are also in many places on Oahu. Why is the capture of one news?

Deport him! Probably someone’s illegal pet.
Yeah big news and I have the exact same ones inside and outside my house. Not a joke. Didn’t know they were aliens.
