Funeral services for kumu hula Joan S. Lindsey will be held Nov. 3 at the Mauka Chapel of Mililani Memorial Park &Mortuary, located at Mililani Memorial Park Road and Ka Uka Boulevard.
Lindsey, founder of the Joan S. Lindsey Hula Studio, died Oct. 15. She was 87.
She taught hula for nearly seven decades in Pearl City and was known affectionately as “Auntie Joanie.” She completed her hula studies with kumu Lokalia Montgomery and was a front-line dancer for songbird Lena Machado. She also served as a Merrie Monarch Festival judge and took her keiki to hula competitions every year on Oahu and Maui.
She is survived by sons George K. Lindsey, Bryan H., and Robert Michael; daughter Lajoy Lindsey; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Public viewing begins at 8:30 a.m., with services scheduled for 11 a.m. Guests are welcome to wear aloha attire, with no restrictions on flowers, lei and donations.
